Boswell himself stayed at this stately house, inherited from his father, during a tour of the Hebrides in 1773. He and his friend Dr. Johnson famously argued politics in the library.
Despite his chippy and vain persona, Boswell loved this house and the land around it. It eventually passed to the Landmark Trust, which restored it and lets it out for overnight guests. The trust also runs a Boswell Book Festival in May. It would be a shame not to visit. It’s worth a day trip from Glasgow.
