About Orfana Railway Station Greece
Orfana is a railway station in Karditsa, Thessaly. It serves the region of Mount Olympus and offers views of the mountain range and surrounding countryside. It is a regional hub with services to Athens, Thessaloniki, Kalambaka, and beyond. The station is well-equipped with ticket desks, bathrooms, comfortable waiting rooms, left luggage facilities, on-site parking, and several eateries.
The station opened in 1908 as Demerli, at the point where a metre-gauge line from Piraeus met a standard gauge line from Thessaly. It was renamed to Orfana in 1912, in honor of the soaring peaks at Orphane, Filio, and Fyllo. During the 1980s and 1990s, upgrades were carried out on the line, including conversion from metre to standard gauge west of Orfana and between Sofades and Kalambaka. Travel times improved and the unification of rail gauge allowed direct routes between Larissa and Thessaloniki, as well as between Sofades and Orfana.
Ferries still connect Athens with other parts of Greece and with Italy.
