The South Coast Rail project will provide a reliable commuter rail connection between southeastern Massachusetts and Boston, allowing riders to travel on one-seat trips without having to change trains. The line will extend the Middleborough/Lakeville Commuter Rail Line to Taunton and split south of Taunton for Fall River and New Bedford. The project is decades in the making, and a timeline for its completion has not yet been established. Please stay clear of railroad tracks and never trespass on them.

Taunton Station is a railway station serving the city of Taunton in Somerset, England, on the London to Penzance line. The station handles 1.2 million passengers on an annual basis, and is operated by Great Western Railway. Services from the station include trains to London Paddington and Exeter St Davids, as well as the overnight Night Riviera sleeper service. Additional services are operated by CrossCountry, and the West Somerset Railway runs mainline steam excursions to the station.

In the 1930s, the lines through Taunton from Cogload Junction to Norton Fitzwarren were widened from two to four tracks, with those to the east of the station brought into use on 13 December 1931 and those to the west on 14 February 1932. This work also forced a rebuilding of the station, which saw the construction of new buildings on the up (north) side and a new island platform in the middle of the station.

In the mid-1990s, the site of Taunton Station was considered as a location for an MBTA Commuter Rail station to Boston, but this plan was cancelled in 2003. A new Commuter Rail station is currently under construction at East Taunton, which is expected to open in late 2023 as part of Phase 1 of the South Coast Rail project.
