1. Parque das Cachoeiras

2. Cachoeira do Surucua

A cachoeira do Surucua é uma das maiores fontes de água na Pantanal. Este local é a base do Projeto Arara Azul (Project of the Hyacinth Macaw, or ‘Blue Bird’), regarded as one of Brazil’s greatest conservation success stories.

The project began in 1990 with the aim of saving this rare bird, which was on the verge of extinction due to habitat destruction and ongoing trapping for the pet trade. The project has been a great success, and the bird population in this region has grown considerably.

In addition to being a fantastic place for wildlife-spotting, Mato Grosso is also a good destination for experiencing the traditional Pantaneiro culture. Visit a cattle farm and watch the local cowboys, called peaos, in their big straw hats sipping on terere (prepared with yerba mate and ice cold water) or herding cattle on horseback or muleback. They clear trails by cutting off palm leaves and branches with their Pantaneiro knife, a simple wooden handle with a blade about 50 centimetres long.

3. Estancia Mimosa
