Nursing Madonna
The Nursing Madonna is a polychrome sculpture of the Virgin Mary and Jesus Christ. It’s located in the village of Aime and is one of the oldest religious pieces in Savoie. The piece is known for its simplicity and its focus on the physicality of the Blessed Mother.
The Madonna is often portrayed holding a baby. During the Middle Ages, it was a popular icon. It was a common image of the Virgin Mary and the infant Jesus. Many believe that nursing Madonnas are a symbol of the Virgin Mary’s maternal love for believers. In addition, art historians believe that Madonnas were meant to emphasize the connection between milk and blood.
