Lefka Railway Station Greece
The Lefke (Camlikoy) Station was part of the West Terminal of the Cyprus General Railways (CGR), a network that transferred timber from the Troodos Mountains to towns and cities throughout Cyprus and also carried freight, ore and minerals on behalf of the Cyprus Mines Corporation. Along with the transport of goods, services and mineral resources, local stations also functioned as telephone centres, telegram offices and postal offices.
The CGR lasted for over 40 years but eventually closed down in 1951 due to financial difficulties. The final train left from Nicosia on 31 December and arrived at Famagusta at 14:57, two hours later. The dismantling process took over two years and many of the locomotives, tracks and other items were sold to the company Meyer Newman & Co. The engine number 1 is now placed as a memorial in Polat Pasa Boulevard in the city of Nicosia as a reminder of the once mighty CGR.
