Kentish Town West Station

Kentish Town West Station is a London Underground station in Travel Zone 2. It is located on the High Barnet Branch of the Northern line and has an interchange with National Rail services.

The station will be closed for up to a year while its escalators are replaced. The current escalators were installed in 1997 and are bespoke to the station, making it difficult to source parts.

The history of the station

Kentish Town West is a London Underground and National Rail station in the London Borough of Camden. It is located between Tufnell Park and Camden Town stations on the High Barnet branch of the Northern line, and also serves Thameslink services at the adjacent National Rail platforms. The station is in Travelcard Zone 2, and all trains serving it are operated by London Overground.

The station opened on 1 April 1867 as “Kentish Town”, and was renamed “Kentish Town West” in 1924. It was closed after a serious fire on 18 April 1971, but was rebuilt and re-opened on 5 October 1981.

The station is staffed from 06:45 to 13:45 Monday to Friday, and has an automated ticket machine on the Northern platform. Ticket machines accept cash and Oyster cards. There is no step-free access, and no ticket office is available on weekends. The station is served by London Buses routes 88, 134, 214, 393 and night route N20.

The design of the station

The ox-blood red glazed terracotta facade of Kentish Town station was designed by architect Leslie Green. Its original opening date was 22 June 1907 on the High Barnet branch of the Northern line, between Tufnell Park and Camden Town and between West Hampstead and St Pancras International stations on the Thameslink main line.

The railway platform building has two London Underground platforms in north-south orientation and four National Rail platforms on a northwest-southeast alignment. All trains serving the core of the Thameslink network pass through but only a small number stop at Kentish Town.

The station is located in Prince of Wales Road in the London Borough of Camden and is in Travelcard Zone 2. It is served by trains operated by London Overground, including Class 378 Capitalstar electric multiple units. London Buses routes 88, 134, 214 and night route N20 also call here. Oyster cards can be used on all trains and at the ticket barriers – but you must touch your Key or Contactless card on the validator before you start your journey.

The services offered by the station

The station offers a number of services and is located on the North London line in Travelcard Zone 2. The station and all trains serving it are operated by London Overground. The basic weekday service consists of six trains per hour in each direction, with four running from Richmond to Stratford and two from Clapham Junction to Stratford. Services are formed of Class 378 Capitalstar electric multiple units, which replaced the older Class 313 EMUs. London bus routes 46 and 393 also serve the station.

Kentish Town West has a ticket office, which is staffed from Monday to Friday and operates as an Oyster ticket machine on weekends. Visitors can purchase tickets for the next day or buy a travelcard online. They can also top up their Oyster cards at the station.

The station is a 10-minute walk from Camden Town and Tufnell Park stations, both of which have additional services to the O2 Forum. In addition, London Underground services are available at nearby King’s Cross St Pancras Tube station.
