How to get to Tua Portugal by train
The best way to experience the Douro Valley without a car is on the train. Regular trains operate year-round between Porto and Pocinho, one of the last villages before the border with Spain. Between June and October, a historic train—complete with steam locomotive—also runs on weekends between Peso da Regua and Tua. It’s an unforgettable way to travel through this spectacular region.
Taking the train is also less expensive than renting a car and a much more convenient option for travelers who are short on time. Many tour operators offer options that combine the train with a river cruise. This allows you to experience the beautiful stretch of river between Pinhao and Tua and see some of the gorgeous manor houses that line the landscape.
You can take the train as part of a tour with Comboios De Portugal or book a private ticket directly through their website. The train departs from Porto – Sao Bento and reaches Tua in around 2 hours and 37 minutes.
It’s a good idea to reserve your tickets ahead of time—especially during the busy summer season. It’s possible to book a ticket online or at the station, but it’s often easier to do it with an app like Omio.
While you’re in the area, don’t forget to visit Miradouro Ilha do Tua and check out the dam that created it. The views from this spot are breathtaking, and it’s an excellent place to have lunch before heading back to Porto.
