How to Get to Portela de Sintra Portugal by Train
Visiting the beautiful neighborhood of Portela de Sintra is easy enough, with several trains running from Lisbon’s Rossio Station throughout the day. Travelers can either purchase tickets in advance or buy them at the station upon arrival. The ride takes about an hour and will leave you right outside the town of Sintra.
It is possible to drive to and from Sintra, but the historic town center was not designed with cars in mind. This makes driving between the sights a major hassle – you will likely spend more time stuck in traffic or hunting for parking than actually exploring the sights. For this reason, we strongly recommend taking the train to and from Sintra.
If you are planning on doing a one day trip to Sintra we would suggest jumping on the first train leaving from Lisbon in the morning (around 9:00 am). This will allow you to explore Pena Palace and Castelo dos Mouros before the crowds descend later in the day. Afterwards you will be able to take a short walk down into town and grab a bite to eat before your return journey to Lisbon in the evening.
Alternatively, you can also catch a rideshare (Uber) from the train station or a local taxi in Sintra. However, be aware that cell service in the area can be spotty and there may not be Uber drivers available later in the day, especially if it is peak season.
