How to get to Pala Portugal by train

The quickest and easiest way to travel from Porto to Pala is on the high-speed Alfa Pendular train. There are multiple connections per day and the journey only takes about 2h40min. The train tickets are available to buy online or at the station a few days before departure.

Generally, trains in Portugal are super affordable and comfortable. They’re a bit old and slower than in other European countries but they do the job well enough. The best part of taking the train is that it offers a beautiful view of Portugal’s lush green countryside.

When travelling between towns it’s best to book a direct train wherever possible. This will save you a transfer time at the train station and ensure you arrive at your destination on time. Most routes will have a transfer though and this can be quick (10-15 minutes) or long (1hr+) depending on how many trains are delayed.

There are three types of train in Portugal: Alpha-Pendular, Intercidades and Regional and Urban (U). Only the Alpha-Pendular and Intercidades trains offer a first class option which is more expensive but includes extra legroom, a larger seat and plug sockets on all seats.

If you’re traveling as a group of 3-4 people, it’s usually much cheaper to purchase a group ticket which is available on Omio and Comboios de Portugal. Omio has a better user interface, accepts all major credit cards and allows you to download digital train tickets to your smartphone app. If you’re under 25, you can also get 25% off with a European Youth Card.
