The modest High Street contains almost entirely convenience and socialising stores; fashion and leisure shops can be found to the north in Walton on Thames. Hersham is home to the mixed, secondary school Three Rivers Academy which has specialist Business and Enterprise College status. There are also three primary schools – Burhill (became a primary in 2015), Bell Farm and Cardinal Newman.

Several sports clubs and facilities can be found within Hersham including a golf club, tennis courts and a rugby union club. Hersham RFC is a multi-pitch club that plays in the RFU National League 1, the third tier of English rugby union.

The Anglican church of St Peter and Paul is a Grade II listed building that dates from the 18th century. It is a large structure with a nave and aisles, five arcades and a western tower and spire. The churchyard contains the ashes of former Liberal Party politician John Dennis Profumo, who married actress Valerie Hobson in 1954 and had an affair with Christine Keeler. His name is commemorated in a road in the village, Profumo Road.

Among its more noteworthy residents have been actress Julie Andrews, who was born in Hersham and wrote her book Home in the village; Granville Bradshaw, engineer and inventor who worked for the ABC Motors company in the early 20th century; former Labour Party politician John Dennis Profumo, who was buried in Hersham churchyard and who has a street named after him near the railway station; and Ross Davidson, professional footballer for Chester City and Sheffield United. The village is bordered by neighbouring Weybridge, Walton on Thames and Esher and has several restaurants, including The Watermans Arms in Queens Road which serves a wide range of fresh and cooked food and the popular Thai restaurant The Royal George in Hersham Road.

The village has an interesting industrial history with coachbuilders such as Compton & Herman Ltd, Faulkners and Hackbridge & Hewittick having plants located in the area.
