The Anglican church of St Peter and Paul is a Grade II listed building that dates from the 18th century. It is a large structure with a nave and aisles, five arcades and a western tower and spire. The churchyard contains the ashes of former Liberal Party politician John Dennis Profumo, who married actress Valerie Hobson in 1954 and had an affair with Christine Keeler. His name is commemorated in a road in the village, Profumo Road.

Among its more noteworthy residents have been actress Julie Andrews, who was born in Hersham and wrote her book Home in the village; Granville Bradshaw, engineer and inventor who worked for the ABC Motors company in the early 20th century; former Labour Party politician John Dennis Profumo, who was buried in Hersham churchyard and who has a street named after him near the railway station; and Ross Davidson, professional footballer for Chester City and Sheffield United.
