Brough Castle is a medieval castle in Cumbria, England, located on a ridge overlooking Stainmore Pass and the ruins of the Roman fort of Verterae. It was originally a wooden motte and bailey built by William Rufus in the 11th century, but was later rebuilt in stone with a tall square keep. Often the target of Scots raids, it was a key part of the estate owned by the Clifford family until it was damaged in a fire in 1521.
