things to do in BartononHumber

Barton-upon-Humber has a past with a future and it’s home to an impressive list of interesting attractions. From Victorian terraced brick houses to relics of the industrial era there are things for everyone.

Water’s Edge Country Park and Visitor Centre is a great place for animal lovers with reed beds, woodland walks and wildflower meadows. The Ropewalk and the Wilderspin National School Museum are also popular attractions for history lovers.

Baysgarth House

The park frames the magnificent Georgian house that houses the town museum run by the Friends of Baysgarth Park. This is a group that set up in 2016 to raise funds to restore areas of the park which had started to look tired. They also meet weekly to assist with weeding and litter picking. In 2017 they raised PS14,000 to turn a disused bowls green into a memorial garden for Chad Varah founder of the Samaritans.

The museum has lots of interesting exhibits and displays on local history including a replica of the Nelthorpe family carriage. The exhibition is free and the library has a collection of books to browse through.

The park is also the venue for large outdoor events such as Barton Beer Festival, cross country runs and a bonfire display. It hosts events for the whole family throughout the year and it is a great place to stroll. Follow the park on Ents24 to be sure you don’t miss an event.

Humber Street Gallery

Located in the Fruit Market cultural quarter, this slick three-storey gallery was established as part of Hull’s City of Culture year in 2017 and is home to year-round exhibitions. An Absolutely Cultured project, the space offers a blank canvas for artists locally, nationally and internationally to showcase their work here. Past exhibitions have included a piece by the COUM Transmissions collective and a group show exploring the boundaries of land and sea.

The gallery is open to everyone and admission is free. Visitors can also make the most of the downstairs cafe offering coffee, tea, soft drinks and indulgent baked goods. And, in the summer months, the rooftop bar offers views across the Fruit Market.

Humber Street Gallery is a short walk from Hull station which is served by Northern and TransPennine Express trains throughout the day. If travelling by car, there are a number of parking options available. There is also a bus route which travels into Barton from Cleethorpes.

Dinostar

Dinostar is a dinosaur museum and interactive attraction that is designed to entertain children. It is located in Hull, East Yorkshire and features dinosaurs that you can see, touch and smell. Guests can also take part in interactive activities such as quiz sheets and stamp collection.

It is also possible to buy genuine and replica fossils in the Dinostar shop. The museum has also run educational workshops for science festivals, visitor attractions and holiday parks. It is a great place to spend a day with the kids and is a must-see for dinosaur lovers.

Laugh-out loud comedy duos, line-dancing dinosaurs and raptors who stomp their feet are just some of the things to expect when the family takes a tour of this quirky little town. Visitors can also ride on The Barton Line, a heritage railway that runs from Cleethorpes to Hull city centre stopping at all of the towns unique and quirky stations along the way.

Humber Bridge

This impressive bridge stretches over the Humber, connecting Kingston upon Hull and Lincolnshire. The structure is one of the longest single-span suspension bridges in the world. Its distinctive design looks like an upside-down aircraft wing, which helps to keep the road deck stable during high winds.

The Humber Bridge is a great place for outdoor enthusiasts, with its walking trails and bridle paths. There is also a play area and a restaurant at the visitor center. For those who want to explore more of the region, there are several other attractions nearby. These include Thornton Abbey & Gatehouse, Waters’ Edge Country Park & Visitor Centre, and Ropewalk.
