Winchester Center Station is undergoing a major renovation to improve structural safety and accessibility for all riders. The project will also add elevators, upgraded canopies, signs and railings, benches, bike racks and a public address system.
During the pre-construction phase of the project, contractors will be paring the site, installing fencing and conducting vibration monitoring. During this time, the construction area at Laraway Road will remain closed.
Commuter Rail
Commuter rail, also known as suburban rail, is a passenger railway transport service that connects people living in suburban areas to the main urban area. The system carries commuters to and from work, school, shopping and entertainment. It operates throughout the day and evening, seven days a week. Unlike local bus systems, commuter rail services offer passengers the opportunity to travel in comfort and arrive at their destination with minimal time.
In addition to the increased capacity and improved accessibility, the renovation will also provide structural safety upgrades. The project is expected to be completed in 2024. Construction will continue through the remainder of this summer at Winchester Center Station including continued demolition and installation of micropiles. The public is advised to expect noise levels that will increase during this time.
The station is served by hourly trains between Winchester and North Station (subway). These services are direct and take on average 17 minutes to reach their final destinations. The ticket office at the station is open every day that services are running, although opening hours may vary.

Walking
There are plenty of good walking routes from Winchester Station, including the shady paths along the River Itchen and Itchen Navigation. These are popular with locals. The walker can also take the opportunity to visit the two medieval gates surviving from the original five – the Westgate and Kingsgate, both with their stone seats (the former with holes for pouring boiling oil).
From the Cathedral, walk south on the stepped path to St Catherine’s Hill, an Iron Age hill fort Site of Special Scientific Interest that offers great views of the city. The path reaches the top via an old mizmaze, then descends to Parnholt Woods and its wood puddles, which contain a variety of orchids including autumn lady’s tresses and bird’s-foot trefoil. This area is also notable for the tussock-like meadow grasses and wildflowers of the chalk downland, which attract 25 types of butterfly.
A footpath north from Winchester leads to Micheldever Station, passing through a nature reserve on the route of the railway. It then crosses farmland to a recrossing of the railway at Winnall Moors. There is a final recrossing of the railway at Badger Farm Road to join the footpath through Winnall Moors Country Park.
A ten minute detour from the station takes the walker to the Cathedral, one of England’s most important buildings and a place of pilgrimage. The 1000 year old cathedral is home to peregrine falcons and hosts tours and events.
