The current Welwyn Garden City Station was opened in 1926, six years after the foundation of the town itself. It replaced the single-platform halt that had been opened on the Luton line in 1920 and was located slightly north of the current location. The new station was built to serve the rapidly growing suburban traffic and the many private sidings serving chalk quarries, sand and gravel pits and Vauxhall Motors in Hertfordshire.
In 1951 the line to Hertford North closed to passenger trains, although a few Railtour services continued until 1960. The line to Hertford reopened as a goods only service in 1959 and closed again in 1966 when it was absorbed into the GNER network.
