When visiting a new place and experiencing its beauty and history for the first time there is often a moment of “wow” when we are truly impressed. This is what many visitors feel as they walk around the magnificent site that is The Friars.
The site was home to a community of Carmelite Friars who first came here in 1242. The Carmelite order left at the dissolution of monasteries in 1538 but in 1949 in an extraordinary twist of fate were able to return to this unique and enchanting place that has now become one of Kent’s hidden treasures.
The extensive grounds are open to the public for free and provide a tranquil space where pilgrims can pray, reflect or simply enjoy the view. Pleasant grass walks, seats beside the old stone ponds and limited planting, including several magnolias and liriodendron specimens, are found throughout the grounds.
The Chequers
There aren’t many places in the world that can claim to have hosted a prime minister, but the 16th century manor house at Chequers is one of them. The country retreat has been the official second home of the prime minister since 1921. It’s located about halfway between Princes Risborough and Wendover in Buckinghamshire, United Kingdom. It’s only about 40 miles from London and is at the foot of the Chiltern Hills.
Over the years, the house has played host to a wide variety of politicians and dignitaries. The likes of Richard Nixon, Mikhail Gorbachev, Vladimir Putin and Margaret Thatcher have all visited the property.
The pub has been closed since a fire in May but owners say they hope to open next month. In a Facebook post, the owners said that while they’ve suffered “significant fire and smoke damage” the historic pub will reopen with a new look.

To complement the meal, we opted for a glass of Kits Coty chardonnay and a Sanford Pinot Noir red wine.
