Domaine Fessy
Domaine Fessy in Romanche Thorins produces outstanding wines. The vineyards are planted on one hectare. Most of the vines are thirty years old and trained in the traditional Gobelet bush vine style. Planting density is around eight thousand vines per hectare. Some of the vineyard parcels for the final blend are only ten to fifteen years old or “Cordon pruned”. All grapes are harvested at their ripeness and then undergo non-carbonic vinification. The wine is then aged in old oak barrels.
The family business specializes in Cru Beaujolais wines. The estate was founded by Jean Pelissier in 1888. The two subsequently grew to own several vineyard plots in the Beaujolais Villages and Cte de Brouilly appellations. Eventually, the estate became part of Maison Louis Latour. The current owners continue to acquire vineyards and continue to make benchmark Beaujolais wines.
Henry Fessy
Henry Fessy is a family winery that has been making wines since 1888. The company focuses on making Beaujolais Crus. The winery is known for its wines with vibrant fruit, crisp acidity, and ‘croquant’ texture. The wines are also very well balanced, with full, juicy Gamay flavors. The wines are popular with traditionalists, as well as with a younger wine clientele leaning towards minimal intervention.
The Fessy family acquired the estate in 1888. They are now making the first Pinot Noir in Beaujolais with it. The winery is named after a lieu dit in the Beaujolais department – Pierres-Dorees, named for a type of iron oxide-tinted stone. This wine is very attractive and has a medium body.
This winery has 14 hectares of vineyards in the commune of Moulin-a-Vent. They are planted on a granite vein that runs through the region. The vineyards are mostly oriented East and Southeast. The vineyards are situated in the En Morier climat, but the company also has two plots in the “Grimarais” climat, which are heavier clay soils and ancient foothills with alluvial deposits.
