How to get to Alcantara-Terra Portugal by train
The gentrified riverside district of Alcantara is renowned for its spectacular views of the 25th of April Bridge and contains many modern amenities. A variety of specialty shops and restaurants abound, making this an ideal location for those who want to live in the heart of Lisbon’s most exciting area, but don’t wish to deal with a hectic city center commute.
The best way to reach Alcantara is by taking the train from the central Lisbon station of Cais do Sodre. The trains to and from Alcantara leave every 20 minutes. The journey takes around 52 minutes and costs around €2.50 – €3.40, depending on the time of day.
Once a bleak industrial zone, Alcantara is now one of the trendiest neighborhoods in Lisbon, with the Lx Factory creative hub at its centre. The converted warehouses of the Santo Amaro Docks, just beneath the 25 de Abril Bridge, host trendy bars and restaurants with waterfront terraces. The nearby Capela das Necessidades is a former royal palace and now a museum with a pretty park and a view of the bridge, while the Orient Museum occupies an old 1940s warehouse.
The area has a range of accommodation options, including the luxurious 5-star Pestana Palace heritage hotel, The Dorm hostel in the Lx Factory, and plenty of great Airbnbs. For those looking for something more affordable, there are many cheap hostels and hotels in the vicinity of Largo do Calvario, just south of the train stop.
