Saint-Andre church
The Saint-Andre church in Joigny is an impressive Gothic structure, enlarged in the thirteenth century and refurbished in the sixteenth. This church has been the burial place of the Counts of Joigny. It contains a beautiful Pieta and a fifteenth-century tombstone.

Saint Vincent de Paul
Saint Vincent de Paul in Joigny was a priest and spiritual director. He worked in the Count’s chapel and was a confessor to the Count of Joigny. He also tutored the Count’s children. In 1617, the Count called St. Vincent to hear the last confession of an old farmer. The farmer was dying and had never heard of the sacrament of confession. Instead, he believed he had confessed his sins all his life.
Vincent’s father had ambitious plans for him. He enrolled him at the Franciscan School de Dax, located five kilometers from his farm. He was happy with his studies and looked forward to leaving the humble life on the farm. However, his father was not pleased with his decision.
Michel Lorain’s restaurant
Michel Lorain’s restaurant in Joign is a three star Michelin restaurant that was founded by his father and is now owned by his son. The restaurant is located on the banks of the Yonne river in Burgundy and has been a Relais & Chateaux member since 1977. It has 32 rooms, a boutique and a spa. Michel Lorain’s parents opened the restaurant in 1945 and Jean-Michel Lorain took over in 1958. In 1971, Michel Lorain was awarded his first Michelin star and in 1976, he was awarded his second Michelin star. His son, Jean-Michel, has continued his father’s legacy by earning his own Michelin star.
The restaurant is Michel Lorain’s last business venture, and it is a fitting tribute to the man who started it all. Michel Lorain died on March 31, 2018, aged 87. His family has announced the passing of their chef and restaurateur on Facebook. Michel Lorain was an entrepreneur and a chef who had been in the restaurant business for decades. He was a great example of how to pass the torch to the next generation.
