Chalon-sur-Sane is a city in eastern France. It is in the department of Saône-et-Loire. You can also find it in the Bourgogne-Franche-Comté region. It is a beautiful, charming place with a rich cultural heritage.
Museum of Nicephore-Niepce
Nicephore-Niepce was the first person to take a photograph, and this museum is dedicated to his legacy. The museum is located in an 18th-century building that was formerly the Hotel des Messageries Royales. Visitors can explore the history of photography through exhibits that showcase his life and work. The museum houses over three million photographs and more than 6,000 camera lenses.
The museum is run by Francois Cheval, the exhibition curator and director of the museum. He is assisted by Christelle Rochette, Jean-Marie Picard and Antony Charmoillaux. The museum is closed on Tuesdays.
Cathedral
The Cathedral of Chalon-sur-Sané is a medieval church and former bishopric. The cathedral was built around 1090 and was originally Romanesque. Later it developed a Gothic façade and elevation. It has a three nave plan with side chapels. It contains a large collection of Romanesque capitals. The cathedral also has a unique canons’ cloister.
The exterior walls of the Cathedral of Chalon-sur-Saone date back to around 1000AD. The three wing designs feature ribbed vaults and trilobe arched bays. In the north wing, a contemporary reconstruction of the gallery was completed, which featured sculptures in Saint-Marc stone. Saint-Marc stone is a Burundy limestone. The cathedral is accessible to the physically challenged.
Street theatre festival
Chalon-sur-Sane is home to one of France’s largest street theatre festivals, Chalon dans la rue. This festival is held annually during the third weekend of July. Thousands of people flock to the streets to see the performances. The event features a multitude of street theatre groups, many of which use the city streets as backdrops.
The festival is a celebration of community and creativity. Many volunteers are students or theatre enthusiasts, and some aspire to a career in the field.
Basketball club
The Élan Sportif Chalonnais (commonly known as Élan Chalon) is a French professional basketball club based in Chalon-sur-Saône, France. The club’s main colors are red and white, and its mascot is a moose. The club plays in a home arena called Le Colisée, which seats around 4,540 fans.
The basketball club was founded in the 1950s and is known as the Elan Chalon. It was later merged with Elan de Saint-Jean des Vignes in the 1970s, and reached professional status in 1994. The club’s most recent title came in the LNB Pro A league, and in the 2011-12 season, Elan Chalon beat Le Mans Sarthe Basket 95-76 in the Final. Billy Ouattara and Clint Capela were among the players to lead the team to victory.
