A train company has been slammed for forcing disabled passengers to change their journey when using one of its services at Liphook. The Office of Rail and Road (ORR) has issued an Improvement Notice to South Western Railway, which runs the trains that stop at this Hampshire station. The train operator was told it must provide a ramp to allow wheelchair users to board and alight independently.
The ramp, which has to be in place by May 2021, would run north from the east end of the Midhurst Road pedestrian bridge towards Haslemere. It would then double back under the empty arch of a footbridge which links platform 1 with 2, providing step-free access for wheelchair and mobility scooter users as well as people with pushchairs and cyclists.
In addition, a new footbridge will be built connecting platforms 2 and 3 at Liphook. This will feature lifts on both sides, making it easier for disabled and mobility scooter users to access each platform without having to cross the tracks.
