There are plenty of things to do in Beckenham Hill. From fitness fanatics to culture vultures and those who love the great outdoors there is something for everyone.
The park offers a range of activities, including golf, a pay-and-play public tennis court and an open swimming lake. There is also a free visitor centre and children’s workshops.
1. Visit Beckenham Place Park
Covering over 98 hectares Beckenham Place Park is Lewisham’s largest green space and has plenty to offer all walks of life. There is a huge open water swimming lake, ancient woodland, the gorgeous Georgian mansion and more.
This is the perfect spot to take the kids for a picnic or for a walk. There’s also the option to join a group run or cycle ride organised by the Friends of Beckenham Place Park.
This is one of my favourite places in south east London. It’s massive so even when it’s busy you can still find a quiet corner to yourself. It’s also home to a lovely mansion, children’s playground and part of the London Green Chain walking route.
2. Go Wild Swimming in the Lake
While the older generation might roll their eyes at it, wild swimming has become a trend that has people taking a plunge in a chilly lake or sea. The idea is to jump in a natural pool of water with no man-made structure around it – although it’s not confined to lakes as some river swims are very popular too.
If you’re a keen wild swimmer, you should join the Outdoor Swimming Society (OSS) for updates on swim spots. It’s also a good idea to check the lake before you jump in to see if it’s full of blue-green algae, which is poisonous and can cause skin rash, eye irritation and sickness if swallowed. If it is, move on to another spot.
3. Visit Cator Park
Beckenham Hill boasts an abundance of green spaces and a thriving high street lined with cafes and restaurants. It’s a great place to visit for nature lovers, families, and people looking for some peace and quiet.
The park’s highlight is its large lake, which is home to a variety of waterfowl and offers plenty of opportunities for recreational activities. There are also conservation areas, kids playgrounds, and a Georgian mansion.
If you’re a fan of David Bowie, don’t miss out on seeing the grade II-listed bandstand where the Starman once performed. The park is also home to a range of other events throughout the year, including open-air concerts and community markets.
4. Visit the Visitor Centre
Besides walks and picnics in Beckenham Place Park, there are also activities that children and adults can enjoy. The mansion hosts the Splatter Make creative art workshop, while Lewisham Council organises family-friendly Forest School sessions (please check their website for availability).
There’s a free children’s playroom at the Visitor Centre. The centre is also home to Breeze Yoga, which offers more than 80 classes per week.
The station serves around 19 trains each day and the journey typically takes around 1 hour and 19 minutes to get to East Croydon. The station has a number of facilities, including Wi-Fi and ticket machines. You can find parking near the station by using JustPark. It’s quick, easy and secure. Plus you can save money by booking your space in advance.
5. Go for a Walk
There are a selection of cool cafes and independent shops along the high street. There are also some good schools and a real sense of community here. This is why many families choose to settle here.
The large Beckenham Place Park is home to nature trails, conservation areas, kids playgrounds, a lake and a Georgian mansion. The park also hosts a number of events throughout the year.
There’s on-street parking close to the Downham entrance on Old Bromley Road (Sat Nav: BR1 4LE), and Crab Hill by Ravensbourne Station (Sat Nav: BR3 5HE). We would encourage visitors to avoid driving as much as possible and to use public transport if they can. The park’s Mansion is an enjoyable 15 minute stroll across the Park from both of these entrances.
