It is preceded by Barry Docks and Cadoxton stations on the rail line that runs from Cardiff Central to a fourth station at Barry Island, and it serves as the junction for the Vale of Glamorgan Line which also services Rhoose and Llantwit Major.

Accessibility
For the first time, Barry Docks station will be fully accessible with a new footbridge and lifts being installed in Summer 2022. The work follows on from the Access for All scheme at nearby Cadoxton station and will make it easier for passengers to travel through the area, making their journeys more enjoyable and removing barriers for people with disabilities or limited mobility.
The new lifts and bridge will provide step-free access to both platforms at the station, ensuring that all passengers can board trains easily. They will also include new lighting and security cameras on and around the lifts, as well as improved signage.
At Transport for Wales we are committed to a fully accessible railway for all, and these upgrades will mean that people with health conditions or impairments, those who have children or heavy luggage and some older people can travel more easily. This will help to increase the number of people travelling by train which in turn will help to reduce congestion and carbon emissions.
The MTA has invested more than $5B in its 2020-2024 capital plan to make an additional 70 subway and Staten Island Railroad stations ADA-compliant. The chosen stations were carefully selected to ensure that customers are never more than two stops from an accessible station, fill geographic gaps in the network, and increase accessibility at high-ridership, transfer, and terminal stations.
